I remember being a Freshman in high school when I first saw a documentary about wrestling on PBS. I’ve been playing sports my whole life, started off playing soccer with my twin brother when I was three. I had a talk with my mom in 9th grade and asked her if I could do wrestling. Right off the bat she said “no”. I was bummed and just continued playing lacrosse and got back into softball. Sophomore year rolled around and a friend of mine encouraged me to go to wrestling practice with him.

Without hesitation I went, and ever since then I’ve been a wrestler. This sport alone has changed and shaped the person I have become throughout high school. It taught me so much about myself, and all the potential I have. My Senior year has been the best year of my life, and I have gone to tournaments that I could have never imagined winning my Sophomore year. Becoming a State Champion has been the biggest accomplishment for me, and to this day it fills me with overwhelming emotion, to think about it.

My family’s constant support of me took me all way through this season, and without them, I would not be able to succeed. This sport has been incredibly influential for me, and I could not imagine where I would be now if I had not started wrestling. I am unimaginably grateful for my coaches, and for them consistently pushing me to succeed and find more in myself. The encouragement and support of my team drives me everyday, to push harder and work harder, in this sport.

I’m still uncertain what the future holds for me, but I intend on studying Sports Medicine in college, as I have been doing all throughout high school. I’d Like to say thank you to my Grandmother, she always told me to, “never play with my food” and I clearly listened to her, since I went undefeated this season.
