Hello, my name is Mia Shepard. I am a college freshman at UNLV aka the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. I ended up re-signing to UNLV from Texas Wesleyan University (TxWes). I just won a National Championship in the National Collegiate Wrestling Association (NCWA) at 117ibs, for UNLV. This past season I focused a lot on growing off the mat. I knew I felt confident in my skills and training, but I had to trust in my mind and my training partner.

I was nervous because I was so focused on moving out and becoming an independent woman. I always wanted to win a National Title no matter what level I was competing at. My senior year of high school I won Reno Worlds at 118, so that technically was my first “National Title” but I knew I wanted more than that. As I joined the UNLV team I met up with a lot of familiar faces, and I also met a lot of new faces that have become very important to me.

Through my first year at UNLV I have made a group of sufficient and meaningful people that I hope stay in my life forever. Throughout my whole wrestling career I have been connected to many people who have impacted my life. One of them who has been by my side, and who I will value and cherish for as long as I can, is Noah Osorio. I refer to him as my little. He is my reason for why I do what I do. If I ever think of anything negative or am having a mental block for wrestling I remind myself that he is watching me as part of his life, and he looks up to me more than most do.

Noah is one of my biggest impacts; as well as my parents. Without them I would not be where I am today. They have put me through private individual lessons and driven me to 5ams, and everything I have needed to be the best version of myself, physically and mentally. They support every action I pursue even if at the time they don’t see why, and they understand on a level no one else ever will, or can. For that I love them, and I will forever cherish the love and time they have given me.

My partner Krystal Corona has shown me that a practice partner is more than just a drill buddy for two hours a day. They can also become a best friend. Your partner can make you love the sport and make the time y’all spend together more valuable. Krystal is part of why I progressed more mentally and believed in myself more, on the mat and off. Friendships come in all different forms; you just have to look out for them. I am excited for what the future holds and hope to help more athletes progress in different ways than just on the mat. Life is short so spend it doing something you love with the people you love. Also, I’m just a baby.
