Marshall’s wrestling journey began in the winter of 2008-2009 as a first-grader at Hunsberger Elementary school, when he brought home a flyer for a youth wrestling club organized by Ross Aguiar (Founder of the Reno TOC) as a feeder program for Bishop Manogue High School. Despite his father’s skepticism as to whether or not he would find it enjoyable, Marshall and his older brother (wearing blue jeans and hiking boots for the first practice) absolutely loved it. Coach Aguiar’s Miners Wrestling Club focused on the fundamentals of the sport in a non-competitive, fun environment. It was in fact, just what Marshall needed to help foster a love for the sport.

He earned his first pair of wrestling shoes a few weeks into the season. The Miners Wrestling Club didn’t participate in local weekend youth tournaments however, and there was no opportunity for competition. Coach Aguiar didn’t think any of his kids were ready for that. Marshall on the other hand, thought he was ready and had a strong desire to compete from that very first day of practice. So the following season, both he and his brother switched gears and they joined the Mustangs Wrestling Club, which is a feeder program for Damonte Ranch High School. There, Marshall found exactly what he was looking for under Coach Eron Hurley.

In 2010, his first year of competition as a 60 pound bantam under Coach Hurley, he found success on the mat and was hooked on wrestling from that point forward. Those early years, spent with the Mustangs, helped him to develop the mental toughness required to be successful. Marshall was fortunate enough to be able to cut his teeth with the likes of Ian Timmins, Cole Dresher, Jacob Ruiz, Brandon Basa and other hard-nosed kids at the Mustangs Wrestling Club. It was a great environment providing a solid foundation which helped pave the way for his future success.

In the off season, usually between other sports (and sometimes during), he worked out with Team Nevada whenever possible, at the old building on Keystone Avenue. There he was coached by Jeremy Mumm, Mike Klapp and a host of other great volunteer coaches–from all over Northern Nevada who gave their time and made a difference in his life. While Marshall played many sports as a youth–like baseball, basketball, soccer, lacrosse, and football; his favorite was definitely wrestling, as he liked the physical nature and the adrenaline rush of one on one competition.

During his middle school years, Marshall also worked out at Team Nevada with coach Trey Edmunds (Hard Work Academy). Later on in high school Marshall began working out with coach Eddie Sorgani (Nevada Elite) and Joseph Lavallee Jr., who both also played major roles in his development while in Reno. Marshall had some great high school coaches in Nevada, but perhaps the most influential was his high school coach in Iowa, Brad Smith of Lisbon High School, who guided him to an Iowa state high school wrestling championship his senior year.

So many people like Dan Burgess (a dear friend and mentor) truly had a hand in helping Marshall grow and develop over the years, paving the way for his success. While not all-inclusive, the list below highlights the head coaches, leaders, mentors and people in his life who made a real difference and are responsible for where he is today. Thank you to all.
