Hi my name is Bertha Cabrera and I am 16 years old. I was born and raised in Las Vegas, Nevada, and I am a Junior at Slam! Nevada. I have been wrestling for two and half years. With the lifestyle of wrestling I have grown emotionally and mentally. My interest for physical sports began when I was four years old in Taekwondo. It was a family deal to do starting with my older siblings, my brother and sister. I was on the sidelines trying to join into the classes before I was able. My older sister became a part of the process and the three of us would then go to our classes.

As time went on, I was the one the to stick to it, and it is still a passion for me today. I have won multiple State Championships for Taekwondo with Master Janaka and Yami which later turned into more training in the form of Jiu-Jitsu. I did a couple of tournaments that placing 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. During the years of Covid it was mandatory to stop for a while, but once they said it okay for people to go out with the safety precautions given, the plan to get back on the mat was immediate. Walking into class were many wrestlers that would use the space to practice.

They stayed over for the Jiu-Jitsu classes and going live with their best kids. They believed I did great against, them and Coach Jose Maestas invited me to wrestle; it worked like a crossover. I went to all practices I could possibly go to becoming a part of Pride Wrestling. I Did my very first tournament when I had just a couple months. I ended up getting 5th place and getting one pin at Rocky Mountains Nationals(RMNs) and later Supreme Gladiators I also took 5th. Later on, at the beginning of the next season, I wrestled at the biggest season openers; Freak Show, and I placed Second. My most recent win was at West Coast TOCs in which I took First Place.

I missed out my Freshmen year, but now I came into Slam! Nevada as a Sophomore and I am coached by Coach Bill Sullivan. Being there is a different exprience, and I am proud of the mat time I got during season and competing in and out of state. I continued to do off season but in Freestyle, and competeing in Women’s Nationals in Spokane, Washington earning All American status placing 7th. Last season, I had a record of 23-4. It is just the start of the new season, but so far my record is 15-1.

I would like to thank my mother for making this all possible, and I am super grateful to have her as my support; the person I love the most, and most importantly–as my mother. I would also to thank the coaches that have been through it; Master Janaka, Yami, Coach Rios, Coach Jose, and Coach Bill. Each of other these people have a different significance to me, but they all are special. I appreciate what they have done for me and love having them by my side. I love the teammates I have. With the many friendships I am able to make and getting out of the shell to be my true self. I hope to continue my journey in wrestling to a Collegiate Level and become an Interior Designer when I grow older. I hope continue to have many more great successes and reach the goals I have for myself.
