Hello, my name is Benjamin Powning. I was born in Reno, Nevada in 2008. I started wrestling at the age of 8 at Damonte Ranch Wrestling Club. My dad wanted me to wrestle so I tried it, I ended up loving it. The Damonte team taught me a lot about wrestling and I could not wait for my first real match. My first ever match was in Carson City; I wrestled in local events in the SWA. Over the years I got a lot of medals. I was loving it, but I quit my third year. I did not wrestle for a while; I wish I never quit, but my 7th grade year I saw a chance to get back into it.

On the Depoali Wrestling team I was teammates with a kid I used to lose to a lot, Andrew Kennon. I also wrestled a kid named Colton Rader with 7 years of wrestling experience. Practicing with them made me a lot better. I almost went undefeated but I lost to Colton, that made me want to get better, but shortly after that I hurt myself mountain biking and didn’t wrestle for a week. The day I got back I had a tournament, and I won it within the first minute of the match.

I am now wrestling at Silver State Wrestling Academy with Coach Joey. Coach Joey has taught me a lot of techniques to beat opponents, and I am 10 times better than I was just a couple of months ago. I have made a few friends there. Some of my favorite hobbies are Bodybuilding, Football, Track & Field, and also Mountain Biking.

“Watching Ben play and show interest in sports, we thought wrestling would be a good idea. He has a natural talent for wrestling, and he’s a quick learner. Ben is very disciplined in many areas in life and being able to focus on wrestling lately has been a huge benefit for him. After a couple years off, he dabbled into a couple other sports, like Basketball, Track & Field and and Cross Country. Ben’s naturally athletic and has interest in pretty much all sports. No matter what sport grabs his attention in the moment, wrestling is the one that he excels at the most, and the one he always returns to. We are looking forward to seeing how far he goes with whichever sport he chooses.”
