Wrestling has been one of my greatest teachers. It’s shown me how to push through challenges, whether they’re physical, mental, or emotional. I started my wrestling journey as a freshman at Bonanza High School, not really knowing what to expect. I’d always been drawn to contact sports, and I wanted to try something new with a few friends. What began as a challenge quickly became a passion for me.
Before wrestling, I trained in Jiu-Jitsu from the age of eight, competing across the country. That gave me confidence, but wrestling brought an entirely new level of intensity and discipline. Early on, I was just learning the basics, grinding through tough practices, and trying to find my place. But over time, I didn’t just find where I fit in; I discovered more of who I am.
My junior year, I joined club wrestling at ATC, and everything leveled up. The coaches there know how to push me to be my best every single day. With their support, along with that of my family and teammates, I’ve grown not just in skill, but also in my mindset, work ethic, and belief in myself.
I’ll never forget my first varsity win. I was only a few weeks into wrestling, competing at 120 lbs in a dual meet. I pinned a Varsity High School boy! The rush I felt was unforgettable. My teammates, coaches, and even wrestlers (and parents from the other team) came up to congratulate me. That moment taught me how much respect and community exist in this sport. It’s not just about competition; it’s about becoming our best and pushing each other to be better.
I’ve qualified for state all three years of high school and have had the chance to wrestle, and even beat, some incredible athletes. One match I’ll always remember was in Reno during my sophomore year. I was wrestling for sixth place in the largest tournament I had ever been in, with my entire team watching. I told myself, “I’m going to win this match,” and I did. That mindset is something I try to bring to every match..
Of course, wrestling comes with its setbacks—those stretches where it feels like I’m not improving. But I’ve learned that progress takes trust and patience. What keeps me going is my love for the sport and the sense of accomplishment that comes from doing hard things and earning every step forward.
My parents have been my greatest supporters. They taught me discipline and hard work growing up, and those lessons help carry me through every tough moment. I’m also deeply grateful to my coaches and teammates for pushing me, believing in me, and supporting me to become the person I am today.
Outside of wrestling, I’m self-motivated and I value family, growth, responsibility, and my faith in God. I also love journalism, art, cooking, and volunteering; each of these keeps me balanced and reminds me to give back. I strive to be someone others can look up to.
Being named NVSportsLocal’s Women’s Athlete of the Month is truly an honor. It reminds me that hard work pays off and motivates me to keep reaching higher. I hope to wrestle in college and one day share this sport with my own children.
Wrestling has taught me that I can do hard things, even when I don’t feel like it. It’s helped me grow into a stronger leader, a more resilient person, and a role model for younger athletes. I hope my story inspires other athletes (especially girls) to keep pushing forward and to chase what they love, no matter the obstacles.
From my first day on the mat, and including today, this has been a journey of growth, passion, and heart. And I’m just getting started.
