Nutrition and Skin Health

Wrestling provides an unfortunate opportunity for skin infections due to the close contact and the moist environment of this sport. There are several types of skin infections: viral, fungal such as Tinea (Ringworm) and bacterial which is Impetigo, MSSA and MRSA. MSRA (Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus) is a more serious infection as it is resistant to antibiotics, where MSSA can be treated with antibiotics. All of these skin issues are not only cumbersome when trying to compete, but can be dangerous and even life-threatening, as in the case of MRSA. There are nutrients such as Vitamin C, Vitamin A and Zinc that can help with wound healing; however, the best plan of action is prevention. Good diet, rest, sanitization and hygiene practices are key.
Poor nutrition makes you more susceptable for infection and can impede wound healing if you are infected. There are many nutrients that facilitate wound healing. Vitamin C strengthens the skin and promotes wound healing. A diet deficient in Vitamin C has been shown to increase the risk of getting an infection from a wound. Vitamin C sources include fruits and vegetables such as tomatoes. Vitamin A increases the inflammatory response and stimulates collagen. Sources such as milk, eggs, dark green vegetables, red fruit and vegetables are rich in Vitamin A. Zinc also plays an important role in wound healing. Sources include meat, dairy and eggs. Finally, adequate protein is essential. A well-nourished athlete, with proper protein levels will heal quicker compared to an Athlete with poor nutrition.
Knowing the best nutritional treatment is important for wound healing, but the key is prevention. A well-balanced diet to help promote a healthy immune system is essential. Our skin is the largest organ in our body. When an athlete has a poor diet and they are worn out from a tough practice or competition schedule, their immune system becomes weak and thus they are more prone to infections. Germs are everywhere, but having a strong defense is the key. A diet adequate in all nutrients plays an important role in warding off infections. Important nutrients include, as mentioned above; Vitamin C, Zinc, but also important is Vitamin D. Vitamin D is found in many foods such as dairy products, but the most obtainable form is getting fresh air and sunshine, as Vitamin D is synthesized from the sun. Finally, good hydration is key. When we are underhydrated our skin becomes more fragile and places us at risk for infection related wounds.
We shouldn’t forget the importance of good hygiene and sanitization. Good laundry routines, as well as sanitizing gear and gym bags are so important. Showering right after practicing and tournaments, as well as proper sanitization keeps the germs from having the potential to invade the skin.
Wrestlers have an increased risk for skin infections due to tough conditioning and the close contact involved. Nutrition not only plays a role in prevention but can also help with healing. An undernourished athlete is not only prone to infection but will have increased time for healing. The importance of a well-balanced diet, good rest, sunshine and proper hygiene is not only essential for good performance, but for skin protection, as well. –Janet Foster, RD, LD
