Hello, My name is Anne Wheable, and I go to White Pine High School(WPHS). This year is only my second year of wrestling. I started wrestling last year with absolutely ZERO experience. I am proud to say, I was part of the first ever WPHS girls wrestling team. Last season, I went the whole time without winning a single match. I never gave up though. Unfortunately, mid-season I injured myself. During one of my matches I sprained my ankle pretty badly and because of that I wasn’t able to give my all and ended up losing. My coaches didn’t think it was too bad, but the next day my ankle was the size of a baseball. I went to the hospital and they told me I’d be out for four weeks and suggested I wear a boot to reduce the amount of strain. I didn’t want to waste any time, I wanted to practice hard and get better. I ignored doctors orders and started wrestling after a little over two weeks. My first tournament back I did really well, the best I’d ever wrestled. I made it to the second period of my matches almost every time which was longer than I’d ever lasted before.

As a team all of us girls went to state, and I ended my season with zero wins, but I had the time of my life. Wrestling was for sure something I was going to do all throughout high school because I loved it, it is so fun and fulfilling. After that, I decided I wanted to wrestle again the next season. I started working out every morning with my dad, doing lots of weight lifting and training. The goal my dad and I set for me is to be a state champ this year. Anyway, fall sports ended and winter sports started. I went to as many open mats and weights as I possibly could before the season officially started.

Last weekend was our first tournament. It was in Panguitch, Utah and I had a total of five matches. My first match I went in with confidence and ended up winning. There were so many tears of joy and my coaches were so pumped. I received several hugs and fist bumps. I continued to wrestle and won every single match thus far. I was 4 for 4. I was nervous for my final match because I was going to wrestle for first. I ended up losing the match and placed 2nd in my weight class. I went into the match thinking I had already lost and that’s why I lost. Wrestling is as much as a mental game as it is physical. I will never have the mental part completely down, but I can always work on it and improve.

I am so grateful for my parents and all my coaches. Specifically my volleyball coach Kenna Almberg and my wrestling coach Buzz Rosevear. They are both amazing people and push me to always do my best. They have always seen my true potential and don’t want me to finish unless it’s on top. My parents have always been so supportive and also want to help me as much as possible to fulfill my goals. The lesson I have learned from my journey is two things. If you put in the work you WILL see results. You won’t get anywhere if you’re not trying. And you can’t ever give up. I worked very hard for my success and it was SOOOO worth it!! It feels amazing.

I try to balance my sports along with my academics. My goal is to graduate with my associates and to be valedictorian. I am well on my way. I have been top of my class both this year and last. I also take college courses during the sports seasons. I have straight A’s and a gpa higher than 4.0. |
